Free speech on the Internet free essay sample
Considers the effect that cyberspace will have on the First Amendment. This paper looks at privacy concerns as they relate to the Internet. The author takes a neutral position stating concerns from both sides and taking the position that more time is needed to figure out just what should be regulated, if anything, and how the government should go about doing this. Some previous court cases are sighted along with actual quotes from the Judges decision. The author further looks at censorship issues in general and how those surrounding the internet would differ from those regarding other forms of media. Ever since the United States Constitution was established, there has been a long-standing debate over the interpretation of the First Amendment. Now, with the emergence of more advanced technologies within the past few years, this debate has been extended into a new realm.

Descartes as an Individualist essays
Descartes as an Individualist essays As a philosopher, Rene Descartes strayed from the structured ways of thinking in the 17th century. His ideas are all based on rationalism, which was a rising way of thinking during this time. In Descartes Discourse on Method and Meditations of First Philosophy he expresses his traveling through different ways of thought with meditation. From this reading it is determinable that he is a philosopher of individualism. Individualism is the idea that the nature of things depends solely on what they are made up of. It is the belief that the individual is the primary unit of reality and the ultimate standard of value. According to individualism, society is a collection of individuals, rather than a larger whole to which they belong. The Cartesian conception of mind is based on the beliefs of Descartes. As Descartes was a very big realist and a philosopher of individualism, this form of beliefs is based very much on the individual. After many years of school, Descartes discarded the structured teachings of his professors: For it seemed to me that I could find much more truth in the reasonings that each person makes concerning matters that are important to him, and whose outcome ought to cost him dearly later on if he has judged badly, than in those reasonings engaged in by a man of letters in his study (6). He devoted his thoughts and ideas entirely to the introspection of the mind. Descartes believed that the power of the individual is from the mind and soul. the soul through which I am what I am is entirely distinct from the body and is even easier to know than the body, and even if there were no body at all, it would not cease to be all that it is (19). His belief was that minds do not depend on the external world to be what they are. As an individualist Descartes believed that individuals are driven to act through their own thoughts and will. He explains that the will consists so...

Discussing two examples, analyse the way in which fashion consumption Essay
Discussing two examples, analyse the way in which fashion consumption is changing in relation to new technologies of consumption, and globalisation - Essay Example Due to the changes that come from the new technologies and globalization, the meaning attached to their clothingââ¬â¢s by their consumers has greatly changed. The consumers currently view their dressing styles as a reflection of their beliefs, values and an extension of their personalities. This in turn means that the choice the consumer makes and wants to be associated with enables him to propel himself or herself among her society. As a result of the globalization process their customersââ¬â¢ influences have changed the meaning of several of the companyââ¬â¢s brands, values along with their standings in the global market. The demand for the designer wear that the company deals in will decrease in the near future, but the demand for their strong comfort products will continue rising since the populationsââ¬â¢ incomes continue rising as technologies advance. The market for their designer clothing is increasing becoming volatile and disorderly due to the changes in customer needs along with desires that require to be satisfied. The volatile nature of the market results from the free flow of information that results from the globalization process. It is also facilitated by the fact that new technologies are increasingly being utilized in the production of several of their commodities. In terms of reaping the benefits of using newer technologies along with globalization, the clothing company has come up with strong and desirable products for their customers. This is all happening because the markets have in turn become more of a challenge to cope with along the high rates of competition. The process of achieving growth is becoming very difficult for the company when it comes to maintaining their uniqueness along with exclusivity as a result of their competitorsââ¬â¢ efforts. This is besides the fact that the clothing company has the desire of growing and expanding their influence using newer technologies and their globalization efforts. Through the

How Modern Terrorism Uses the internet Research Paper
How Modern Terrorism Uses the internet - Research Paper Example The Internet provides terrorists with several advantages. For example, terrorists could operate in a clandestine manner from a distance. Such endeavors could be across national and continental borders, and could be conducted without fear of detection or regulation. The expenditure and risk involved in cyber ââ¬â attacks are significantly lower than a physical attack. Furthermore, cyber ââ¬â attacks tend to attract the attention of the media to a considerable extent (Why Terrorists Use the Internet, 2005). These advantages are off setted by several disadvantages. For instance, the intricacy and distributed nature of the Internet makes it very difficult to control a terrorist attack and achieve the sought for objectives. Terrorist attacks on the Internet chiefly cause economic damage, and there is very little scope for employing such attacks to cause physical harm (Why Terrorists Use the Internet, 2005). As such, a terrorist attack that does not entail death and injury attracts less attention and is therefore less effective in spreading terror. Moreover, terrorists host websites that display terrifying videos of their brutal murders. One such video showed the brutal killing of an American journalist by the Islamic terrorists. The Islamic terrorist group, Al Qaeda employs advanced communication technology in conjunction with multimedia, in order to engage in a highly sophisticated form of psychological warfare (Weimann, 2004). The al Qaeda has unremittingly declared; via its websites that its attack on the World Trade Center served to significantly damage the US economy, in addition to causing severe psychological damage to the populace. This contention has been borne out to some extent by the weakening of the dollar and the diffidence generated in the US economy, at the national and international level (Weimann, 2004). Moreover, the Internet provides a convenient means for raising funds for not only political organizations, but also terrorist groups. In a ddition, terrorist groups employ the Internet to recruit and mobilize cadres. Terrorist organizations not only use the various web technologies to enhance their allure, but they also collect information about the entities that browse through their websites (Weimann, 2004). In addition, technical information regarding the manufacture and use of explosives is readily available on the Internet. For instance, there are several websites that post The Anarchist Cookbook and The Terroristââ¬â¢s Handbook. These are detailed manuals for manufacturing a vast array of explosive devices (Weimann, 2004). A major use of the Internet made by terrorist groups is for planning and coordinating terrorist attacks. The September 11 attacks were witness to the large scale use of the Internet by the al Qaeda to mount its murderous attacks. A large number of encrypted messages were retrieved by federal officials from the computer of the al Qaeda terrorist Abu Zubaydah, the monster who had masterminded t hese iniquitous attacks (Weimann, 2004). Realizing the benefit being derived from the Internet, by the terrorists, the US Government embarked upon a counterterrorism strategy. This strategy was aimed at infiltrating the message boards of the Islamic terrorists. In addition, the staunch ally of the US, namely the UK was successful in hacking an English language online magazine of the al Qaeda (Ackerman, 2011). Moreover, in the UK, the Home Office had proposed that filtering software was

death of a salesman Biff the Hero? In Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s, dramatic play, Death of a Salesman the Loman family presents its self as being the perfect nuclear family as opposed to their dysfunctional nature. Even though Miller portrays Willy Loman as the main character of the story, his lack of praise worthy traits make it necessary for another to be the hero. This other character comes in the form of Willyââ¬â¢s son, Biff Loman, who may not succeed in regards to Willyââ¬â¢s dreams, but still deserves the honor of being called the hero of the play. Biff shows qualities describing a hero because he grows up with false ideals but later rejects them searching for his true identity. To analyze Biff Loman the most important aspect comes from his change in self-realization that represents his dynamic nature. This dynamic nature shows with his interaction in regards to other characters and with respects to underlying themes in the play. Even though many people have influenced Biff over his life, only h is family has left a significant impact on it. Their presence and importance in his life make it necessary to view the motivating aspects of his interaction with them, whether it is positive or negative. The first character that we must analyze comes in the form of the overbearing but idolized father, who sets the foundation for Biffââ¬â¢s beliefs and way of life. Many different aspects of this relationship can be portrayed in reference to Biffââ¬â¢s ultimate and final realization at the end of the play. In Biffââ¬â¢s youth, he accepts and adores everything that pertains to Willy because that is the nature of a small child. Even though we later realize the err in Willyââ¬â¢s ideology, his initial instincts to teach his son success held no faults. Willyââ¬â¢s hopes and goals were pure (Onger 154). On the other hand, Willyââ¬â¢s excessive need to promote vanity and unfulfilling popularity, sets the stage for Biffââ¬â¢s eventual letdown. Willy provides Biff with an ego because of the high praise given to Biff that makes him conceited. Such great praise prompts Biffââ¬â¢s pride of himself and his family, which leads Biff to feel contentment and fulfillment in his younger years before his dreams come to an end. But, his flaw comes in the form of hubris or arrogance that goes hand in hand with his father's belief in his own greatness. Biff so readily believes his fatherââ¬â¢s assumptions that he will not work at any ... ...With this in mind Biff forces himself to break the barriers of his fathers confining concepts and to evaluate his own life. Biffââ¬â¢s understanding of Willyââ¬â¢s inability to realize his [Willyââ¬â¢s] identity, proved vital to Biffââ¬â¢s own search for self identification. Willy further proved his inability to understand by finally committing suicide and thinking that it would bring happiness to Biff. Biff shows his dynamic nature in the rejection of false ideals and in the search for true identity. One last proof of his change shows up in a strong symbolic element of the play. When Biff stole footballs in his youth, he felt no shame or sorrow, but that does not hold true in the case of the fountain pen he stole from Oliver. "I took those balls years ago, now I walk in with his fountain pen? That clinches it, donââ¬â¢t you see? I canââ¬â¢t face him like that!" (Miller 88). By regret for his actions, Biff proves the maturity he gains, which no other c haracter can attest for. Because of such amazing development, "â⬠¦Biff, having completed his search for self-identity in the face of the odds which had driven his father crazy, emerges as the true protagonist of this play" (Sharma 79).

Dynamics San Andreas Reflection Essay
We just recently had a lesson in Science about earthquakes and talk about some stuff until we arrived on how about we will watch the new movie ââ¬Å"San Andreasâ⬠directed by Brad Peyton. So our teacher agreed to our suggestion and we felt excitement because we knew that we will be watching an action-packed movie. I watched the trailer at home again to know what I should expect from the movie. And I also felt curious about the San Andreas Fault which will be the main reason of destruction as what I have observed after watching the movie trailer. So the day came and we watched the movie. First scene in the movie and some of us were already thrilled as a girl and her dangling car were stuck between two cliffs because of the falling rocks from a mountain. And I also felt a little bit worried for the girl because I donââ¬â¢t want a cute girl to die right at the start of the movie :P. But then Dwayne Johnson as rescuer Ray came to rescue the girl with their helicopter and I felt excitement as they rescue the girl. It was an intense rescuing scene and some of us, especially the girls shouted while watching the scene. Also one of the intense and jaw-dropping scenes that made us go shouting is when the part where in the film, a previously unknown fault near the Hoover Dam in Nevada shakes and jiggles the San Andreas. The Southern California is rocked by a powerful magnitude-9.1 quake followed by an even stronger magnitude-9.6 in Northern California. As the movie goes, it never failed to entertain us. Also the stories of the characters featured in the movie were really interesting. If I were to put myself in the situation they were in, I might have a very low chance of surviving the disaster. I wouldnââ¬â¢t want to experience the type of catastrophe shown in the movie as well. Maybe the least thing I can do is to be prepared because I know we canââ¬â¢t predict or stop natural disasters and pray to God that He wonââ¬â¢t let it happen to us, mankind. The San Andreas has long been considered one of the most dangerous earthquake fault and the movie showed us that it really is.
